Students with disability
Every child or young person is welcome to learn at their local ACT public school. Our school is committed to removing barriers so all students can access learning. Quality teaching practice helps all students, and our teachers make adjustments for students who need them to ensure they successfully access and participate in learning and school activities.
Adjustments for students may include:
- providing extra visual cues and information
- breaking down tasks or presenting them in a different way
- providing more practice of learning tasks or repetition
- checking for understanding
- changes to the environment
- providing other ways for a student to communicate
- strategies to meet a student’s sensory needs
- access to quiet spaces to assist with regulation.
These adjustments might be made in a smaller group learning situation and at times the class teacher may be assisted by another educator.

Small Group Program
At Charnwood-Dunlop School we run a small group program for eligible students. Our small group program provides specialised, individualised support for students who require it, often those with disabilities or specific learning needs. This program involves smaller class sizes, with a lower student-to-teacher ratio. Students may spend time in both our small group setting and mainstream classes, with learning tailored to their individual needs through Individual Learning Plans (ILPs).
Key aspects of small group program at our school:
- Targeted Support: Small group programs are designed to address specific learning needs, such as literacy, numeracy, social skills, and organisational skills.
- Individualised Learning: Students have an ILP developed collaboratively by teachers, parents, support workers and the student, outlining specific goals and strategies.
- Flexible Learning Environments: Students may participate in small group settings, mainstream classes, or a combination of both, depending on their needs.
- Eligibility: Students may be eligible for our small group program based on criteria related to intellectual disability, Autism Spectrum Disorder, or other identified needs.
